Carbon8 Short Film: How We Design a Water Glass

‘Tis the season… to try and delight our clients. This year the Carbon8 team decided to tackle our holiday card by doing a video highlighting our creative process. So we produced a short film dedicated to how we design a water glass.

Except… not really. As you can see, we’re a motley bunch, prone to overblown senses of self, an overuse of musical instruments and a love of integrating bongs into our work.

This video was a lot of fun to create. It started with a nugget of an idea, and grew into a script, a one-day shoot (with lots of props) and ended up a full-on mockumentary short. And it actually had a grain of truth to it. We’d been working on updating our in-house glassware, but, as usual, more pressing projects kept getting in the way (for months). Finally, it started to become an office joke. So we thought, “why not make this a thing?”

We wrote a script about our glass, and what it would take to make the design and production happen. The script was meant to be very fluid, because I then interviewed our staff, using a series of serious questions that would be edited out-of-context. Finally, we drafted a ridiculous shot list of all the things we’d do to formulate ideas (like sticking Post-Its on one another) and put the shots together in post, adding music and graphic text.

We all have dry senses of humor, and I love the Christopher Guest style of comedy, so we tapped into that sensibility for the finished piece.

One part “Waiting for Guffman”, one part “The Office” and 100% Carbon8ed.

If you like the video and want your very own special edition Carbon8 glass, stop by our office to meet us or set up some time to chat with us. Our info is here.

Now, ahem, raise your glass, and cheers to a terrific 2014! #carbon8 #waterglass
